Diabetes Type 2 Treatment in Vamo, FL

If you were to ask 10 doctors what they thought the key to happiness is, nine would probably say that great health plays a big role. But as we age, we often begin to take shortcuts in life that affect our health. We forego exercise for binging on Netflix. We substitute nutritious, whole foods for quick and easy alternatives at a drive-thru. We burn the midnight oil instead of getting a full eight hours of sleep. With time, poor life choices can lead to serious, snowballing consequences, like Type 2 Diabetes.

In April 2024, the CDC stated that nearly 37.3 million adults in the United States - which accounts for about 11.3% of the population - have received a diabetes diagnosis. Among them, 28.7 million have Type 2 Diabetes.

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which the body experiences high sugar levels for extended periods. With diabetes, your body either doesn't produce enough insulin or is unable to use it effectively. Insufficient insulin or decreased insulin sensitivity leads to elevated blood sugar levels, which can result in severe health complications over time, including:

When Should I Speak to a Diabetes Doctor in Vamo, FL?

Vamo Diabetes Treatment Vamo, FL
Excessive Urination and Thirst

If you're constantly drinking water to quench your thirst or find that you have to go to the bathroom to urinate frequently, it could be a sign of Type 2 Diabetes. But why? When glucose levels in your body are high, it causes the body to remove extra fluids, leading to more thirst and frequent urination.

Fatigue

Do you get a full eight hours of sleep every night but still find yourself slogging through the day and drinking coffee to try to stay awake? This is a hallmark sign of Type 2 Diabetes. While there may be other factors at play, inefficiency in utilizing glucose for energy can cause persistent tiredness and weakness.

Visual Disturbances

If you notice your vision changing or becoming more blurry, you might need more than a new prescription for eyeglasses or contacts. When blood sugar levels in your body fluctuate, some patients experience blurred vision or changes to their vision. If you notice this happening frequently, it's probably time to reach out to a diabetes specialist.

Impaired Wound Healing

When we get a scratch or cut, our body does a miraculous job of healing the wound by itself over time. When you have Type 2 Diabetes, however, wound healing can become much slower. This can lead to a number of complications, not just as it relates to wound healing but also to your ability to resist infections.

Neuropathy

In the United States, neuropathy and diabetes often go hand-in-hand, with about 50% of people with diabetes suffering from the condition. In fact, the number of people with neuropathy is only increasing as diabetes becomes more common and the population ages. Type 2 Diabetes-induced nerve damage can cause sensations of tingling or numbness, particularly in the hands and feet. If you notice such symptoms, contact Sarasota Diabetes & Neuropathy Center as soon as you're comfortable doing so.

Sarasota Diabetes & Neuropathy Center Pro Tip: Type 2 Diabetes symptoms may not be obvious in the beginning, so regular health screenings and glucose monitoring are crucial for early detection and effective management. Try Meal Planning with the Diabetes Plate

You can make healthy eating easier by using the "Diabetes Plate," which is a low-carb meal framework that helps you support your diabetes management with sensible food portions. Begin with a nine-inch plate and divide it in half to include non-starchy vegetables, one-quarter with lean proteins, and the remaining one-quarter with quality carbohydrates such as starchy vegetables, fruits, whole grains, or low-fat dairy.

If you're serious about sticking to a healthy diet, try eating these foods instead of processed products and meals from fast food restaurants:

Protein

Protein is a key part of a diabetes meal plan.Unfortunately, popular protein sources like red meat aren't always the best choice when you are obese or have diabetes. Try eating more skinless, grilled chicken and grilled or broiled fish instead. If you're a plant-based eater and avoid meat, don't worry. There are plenty of protein-packed plant-based options like beans, hummus, and lentils. But keep in mind that many legumes contain carbs, which can affect your diabetes management.

Non-Starchy Veggies

When you're using the Diabetes Plate example as your guide, try filling half your plate with non-starchy veggies like broccoli, collard greens, spinach, or cauliflower. They keep you feeling full and provide great-tasting nutrients without as many calories and carbs.

Healthy Fats

Many patients raise their eyebrows when their diabetes doctor tells them to include more fats in their diets. Of course, we're not talking about the bad fats you find in foods like seed oils, fried foods, and desserts like ice cream. We're talking about healthy fats found in foods like nuts, avocados, fish, and olive oils. These healthy fats can actually help protect your heart and lower your cholesterol.

Meal Planning Icon
Fruits

Few things are as refreshing as eating a fresh apple or orange from your local farmer's market. Fruits are a great source of carbohydrates, but they also contain essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber, similar to vegetables. Perhaps most importantly, fruits can satisfy your sweet cravings without the need for added sugar.

You're Not Alone at Sarasota Diabetes & Neuropathy Center

If you have Type 2 Diabetes and are having trouble with your diet, you're not alone. At Sarasota Diabetes & Neuropathy Center, many of our new patients must adjust their eating habits to truly reverse their diabetes symptoms. Fortunately, they don't have to do it alone, and neither do you. When you join our diabetes treatment center, you'll benefit from meal plans and exercise recommendations personalized to your body. SUNRISE, Fla. — The Florida Panthers extended its winning streak to five games on Monday, after beating the in-state rival Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1.

Monday’s game was "Vamos Gatos" night at Amerant Bank Arena, celebrating Hispanic heritage and the Hispanic community in South Florida. In addition to specialty "Vamos Gatos" artwork throughout the arena, collections of Hispanic artwork were on display.

Watch Fox 4's Alex Orenczuk report from Amerant Bank Arena:

“The colors are vibrant and beautiful, very exciting,” said Panthers fan Celesse Devito . “I love art so of course I like to see expressions in any form but especially when it involves the cats it's awesome.”

Carlos Solano, artist and curator behind the Vamos Gatos collections told Fox 4 that the themed night helps attract Hispanic fans, who might have never experienced a Panthers game before.

“Bringing a little bit of their story into the arena I would hope on our end would help for them to cross that bridge and come see a game and be proud of who we are and be proud of the team, and just enjoy the whole new experience of hockey,” said Solano.

On the ice, 12-year league veteran defenceman Seth Jones played nearly 23 minutes and put three shots on goal in his debut with the cats after being acquired from the Chicago Black Hawks on Saturday.

“He’s going to be really good for us," said Head Coach Paul Maurice. "Moves the puck clean. He’s got a set of hands on him. For flying from Anaheim yesterday to get here, and then to have everything be brand new—mostly he’s playing on instinct out there. The East is so much different than the West. I was really pleased at his ability to process and play the game. We’ll get the systems down, we’ll get all the other stuff down which will make him faster.”

The Panthers traded back up goaltender Spencer Knight and a conditional first round pick for Jones. Following the move, on Sunday, the Panthers’ alternate captain Matthew Tkachuk was placed on the long term injured reserve after getting hurt during the Four Nations Face-Off. Tkachuk has missed the last four games with the cats.

Captain Aleksander Barkov scored both Panthers’ goals on Monday’s victory against the Lightning, extending the team’s win streak to four games. The Panthers will play again on Thursday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets during the second "Vamos Gatos" night.

NEWS

The phrase hidden gem is often used by real estate agents to describe any appealing neighborhood that is not positioned on a major road.

But in the case of Pelican Cove, it is not just hyperbole. The community is hidden, and it is a gem.

Located near Sarasota Square Mall, between Vamo Road and Little Sarasota Bay, Pelican Cove is one of the area's most attractive and unusual developments.

Pelican Cove has been a "Community of Excellence," as recognized by the Florida Community and Association Journal, for the past three years, said Connie Lang, the community's general manager.

The gated, bayfront community sits on 75 lush, forested acres and has 731 condominiums nestled among the woods, well-kept lawns and gardens.

A former owner of the land, May Wilbanks, loved Florida's abundant vegetation. Many of the trees and shrubs throughout the development have identifying labels, giving it the feeling of a botanical garden.

Pelican Cove consists of six informal neighborhoods whose names reflect their location on the property: the Bayhouses; the Harborhouses, along an 87-slip boat harbor; the Grovehouses; the Glenhouses; and the Brookhouses, on Clower Creek.

Except for the Treehouses, which feature town homes with living areas of more than 2,000 square feet, the condos occupy two-story buildings. Altogether, the homes have 23 floor plans.

Although the population consists mostly of retirees, many of them former university professors, CEOs and professionals, Pelican Cove is not a 55-and-older community. According to Missy Cleary, an agent for RE/MAX Alliance Group and the Cleary Group, "There are lots of kids in the swimming pools during season -- children of visitors and grandchildren of the residents. It's a very friendly community."

Because her father-in-law was a resident and started to sell properties there 15 years ago, Cleary knows the area well. "We find that people are attracted to Pelican Cove for its amenities and lifestyle, and its rich cultural and academic appreciation," she said.

There are three clubhouses, which provide a variety of activities. One is Wilbanks' original, Old Florida home on the bay that has been fully restored. The two upstairs suites can be rented by residents to house visiting family and friends.

Another, Harbor House, has a swimming pool, hot tub, fitness center and tennis courts, as well as a sculpting studio. The newest clubhouse, the Pavilion, features an auditorium with a stage and a state-of-the-art sound system for concerts, exhibitions and meetings.

There are ballroom/Latin and tap dance classes, cooking classes, a singles club, a computer club, bridge and poker nights, art shows and the popular Pelican Cove University, an adult-education program featuring resident "professors" who teach 20 courses during the season. Residents can join for $3 a year.

For those who like to stay active, the community has miles of walking trails featuring scenic vistas along the mangrove-lined bay shore, plus Tai-Chi and ping-pong programs and water-exercise classes. The six swimming pools, one for each neighborhood, are open to all residents. Kayak and canoe storage is available by the bay.

Pelican Cove also is popular with boaters. The slips in the harbor accommodate vessels up to 40 feet. Fees are about $550 a year for a 20-footer.

"You're right on the Intracoastal Waterway, and can shoot down to Venice or up to Sarasota," Cleary said.

The community is pet-friendly and has a dog run. "You're allowed to have two large pets, which is a big deal in the condo world," she said.

A strong homeowners' association provides on-site management, fulltime maintenance and pest control. It also has an in-house closed-circuit television channel and puts out "The Pelican Cove News" to give residents information about activities throughout the year.

Sales in Pelican Cove have been steady. There were only two short sales and one foreclosure as a result of the housing boom and bust. Last year, from January to August, 29 units were sold; this year saw 31 sales, ranging in price from around $100,000 to $295,000.

"The $140,000-to-$220,000 units were very popular, and some of the water views because they got down under $300,000," Cleary said. "You can't find that anywhere else in the county."

Currently, 26 listings are active; the Cleary Group has nine. They start at $104,000 and go up to $449,000.

"The waterfront condos are the high-ticket items," Cleary said.

Many of the condos are bought by snowbirds who are planning for their retirement.

Eventually, as they get older and sell their house up north, Pelican Cove becomes their home, Cleary said.
