Diabetes Type 2 Treatment in Sarasota, FL
If you were to ask 10 doctors what they thought the key to happiness is, nine would probably say that great health plays a big role. But as we age, we often begin to take shortcuts in life that affect our health. We forego exercise for binging on Netflix. We substitute nutritious, whole foods for quick and easy alternatives at a drive-thru. We burn the midnight oil instead of getting a full eight hours of sleep. With time, poor life choices can lead to serious, snowballing consequences, like Type 2 Diabetes.
In April 2024, the CDC stated that nearly 37.3 million adults in the United States - which accounts for about 11.3% of the population - have received a diabetes diagnosis. Among them, 28.7 million have Type 2 Diabetes.
Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which the body experiences high sugar levels for extended periods. With diabetes, your body either doesn't produce enough insulin or is unable to use it effectively. Insufficient insulin or decreased insulin sensitivity leads to elevated blood sugar levels, which can result in severe health complications over time, including:
-
Heart Disease
-
Stroke
-
Blindness and Vision Loss
-
Kidney Disease
-
Neuropathy and Nerve Damage
-
Erectile Dysfunction
-
Gum Disease and Dental Problems

Becoming a patient at Sarasota Diabetes & Neuropathy involves a comprehensive, step-by-step process tailored to ensure the most effective treatment pathway for reversing Type 2 Diabetes and addressing other underlying health concerns. Here's what the journey typically involves:

1. Consultation
Your diabetes therapy begins with an initial consultation. During this first meeting, we'll get to know you better and take a deep dive into your current concerns, health history, and treatment goals. This step is very important and helps us ensure our approach is a good fit for your needs and that you can derive maximum benefit from our care.

2. Blood Testing
After your diabetes consultation, we conduct thorough blood testing. This enables us to obtain valuable information about your metabolic health, including how your body processes and utilizes nutrients, as well as your hormonal balance. We also gather insights into potential nutritional deficiencies and other important health markers that may not be typically detected through conventional testing.

3. Additional Testing
Based on the results of your initial blood tests, additional assessments, such as stool and saliva tests, might be suggested to enhance our comprehension of your current health condition. This further testing enables us to fine-tune your treatment strategy with increased accuracy.

4. Begin Implementing Nutraceuticals and Lifestyle Changes

This approach aims to tackle the underlying causes of your health concerns by harnessing natural supplements and making tweaks to your diet, exercise, and other lifestyle elements to promote significant and positive improvements in your health.

5. Review of Results and Recommendations
Once your test results come back, we'll schedule a follow-up meeting to discuss them in detail. During this session, we explain the significance of your test outcomes and outline the initial steps of your personalized treatment plan. We'll also provide specific recommendations tailored to you to help make this journey purposeful and encouraging.

6. Your Partner in Health
During this process, we become your partner in health and provide guidance, support, and adjustments to your treatment plan as necessary. Our goal isn't to mask or treat your diabetes symptoms. We want to help you live a longer, healthier, more enjoyable life by addressing the root causes that are making you sick.
When Should I Speak to a Diabetes Doctor in Sarasota, FL?
As diabetes specialists, we're often asked when the best time to speak to a diabetes doctor is. The truth is that it depends on the patient and what they're experiencing when they enquire. If you notice any of the following symptoms, it could be time to contact a diabetes specialist.

Excessive Urination and Thirst
If you're constantly drinking water to quench your thirst or find that you have to go to the bathroom to urinate frequently, it could be a sign of Type 2 Diabetes. But why? When glucose levels in your body are high, it causes the body to remove extra fluids, leading to more thirst and frequent urination.

Fatigue
Do you get a full eight hours of sleep every night but still find yourself slogging through the day and drinking coffee to try to stay awake? This is a hallmark sign of Type 2 Diabetes. While there may be other factors at play, inefficiency in utilizing glucose for energy can cause persistent tiredness and weakness.

Visual Disturbances
If you notice your vision changing or becoming more blurry, you might need more than a new prescription for eyeglasses or contacts. When blood sugar levels in your body fluctuate, some patients experience blurred vision or changes to their vision. If you notice this happening frequently, it's probably time to reach out to a diabetes specialist.

Impaired Wound Healing
When we get a scratch or cut, our body does a miraculous job of healing the wound by itself over time. When you have Type 2 Diabetes, however, wound healing can become much slower. This can lead to a number of complications, not just as it relates to wound healing but also to your ability to resist infections.

Neuropathy
In the United States, neuropathy and diabetes often go hand-in-hand, with about 50% of people with diabetes suffering from the condition. In fact, the number of people with neuropathy is only increasing as diabetes becomes more common and the population ages. Type 2 Diabetes-induced nerve damage can cause sensations of tingling or numbness, particularly in the hands and feet. If you notice such symptoms, contact Sarasota Diabetes & Neuropathy Center as soon as you're comfortable doing so.
Sarasota Diabetes & Neuropathy Center Pro Tip: Type 2 Diabetes symptoms may not be obvious in the beginning, so regular health screenings and glucose monitoring are crucial for early detection and effective management. If you're looking for a trusted diabetes clinic to perform those tests and help you on the road to diabetes recovery, we're only a phone call away.
Top Ways to Eat Well When You Have Diabetes
When you choose our diabetes treatment center in Sarasota, FL, one of our first goals is to teach you how to eat healthy, nutritious foods. Maintaining a healthy diet for prediabetes and diabetes not only aids in the management of your blood glucose levels but also fosters a positive relationship with food. Feeding your body with nutritious foods supports optimal bodily functions. The good news is that healthy eating doesn't need to be complicated. Regardless of your food preferences, making some simple substitutions can have a significant impact.
Making informed food choices is crucial for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Food is the fuel for the body and plays a vital role in managing diabetes. With that said, no matter what type of eating plan our diabetes specialists recommend, you can always count on these basic guidelines:
-
Heart Disease
-
Stroke
-
Blindness and Vision Loss
-
Kidney Disease
-
Neuropathy and Nerve Damage
-
Erectile Dysfunction
-
Gum Disease and Dental Problems

Try Meal Planning with the Diabetes Plate
You can make healthy eating easier by using the "Diabetes Plate," which is a low-carb meal framework that helps you support your diabetes management with sensible food portions. Begin with a nine-inch plate and divide it in half to include non-starchy vegetables, one-quarter with lean proteins, and the remaining one-quarter with quality carbohydrates such as starchy vegetables, fruits, whole grains, or low-fat dairy.
If you're serious about sticking to a healthy diet, try eating these foods instead of processed products and meals from fast food restaurants:

Protein
Protein is a key part of a diabetes meal plan.Unfortunately, popular protein sources like red meat aren't always the best choice when you are obese or have diabetes. Try eating more skinless, grilled chicken and grilled or broiled fish instead. If you're a plant-based eater and avoid meat, don't worry. There are plenty of protein-packed plant-based options like beans, hummus, and lentils. But keep in mind that many legumes contain carbs, which can affect your diabetes management.

Non-Starchy Veggies
When you're using the Diabetes Plate example as your guide, try filling half your plate with non-starchy veggies like broccoli, collard greens, spinach, or cauliflower. They keep you feeling full and provide great-tasting nutrients without as many calories and carbs.

Healthy Fats
Many patients raise their eyebrows when their diabetes doctor tells them to include more fats in their diets. Of course, we're not talking about the bad fats you find in foods like seed oils, fried foods, and desserts like ice cream. We're talking about healthy fats found in foods like nuts, avocados, fish, and olive oils. These healthy fats can actually help protect your heart and lower your cholesterol.

Fruits
Few things are as refreshing as eating a fresh apple or orange from your local farmer's market. Fruits are a great source of carbohydrates, but they also contain essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber, similar to vegetables. Perhaps most importantly, fruits can satisfy your sweet cravings without the need for added sugar.
You're Not Alone at Sarasota Diabetes & Neuropathy Center
If you have Type 2 Diabetes and are having trouble with your diet, you're not alone. At Sarasota Diabetes & Neuropathy Center, many of our new patients must adjust their eating habits to truly reverse their diabetes symptoms. Fortunately, they don't have to do it alone, and neither do you. When you join our diabetes treatment center, you'll benefit from meal plans and exercise recommendations personalized to your body. We make it easy to stick to a healthy diet by monitoring your progress and offering suggestions and encouragement when needed.

With a new waste collection process looming on March 31, Sarasota County residents can see what their new garbage collection day is using an online map.
In 2024, Sarasota County ended its 20-year partnership with Waste Management. Waste Pro of Florida and FCC Environmental Services signed four year contracts beginning at the end of March for garbage collection services.
The two providers will split services across two districts of unincorporated Sarasota County. Waste Pro will cover the North District, an area north of State Road 72 and east of Midnight Pass Road. FCC Environmental will cover the South District, which encompasses coastal areas and eastern Sarasota County.
"Garbage, recycling and yard waste will continue to be collected on one day," a county fact sheet said. "There are no changes to recycling. Continue using your blue recycling cart and follow current disposal guidelines."
There is also no change to yard waste collection guidelines.
The county is still delivering new garbage carts to residents, a process scheduled to be completed by March 23. There were three sizes to choose from: 95-gallon, 65-gallon, and 35-gallon, although exchanges will be available in July.
Those who live in the cities of North Port, Sarasota, and Venice are excluded, but the county map provides links for those residents to find more information on their garbage collection.
Over each company's respective four-year contract, the county will pay FCC Environmental Services $7.1 million and Waste Pro $5.8 million, according to county records.
Those who want more information on new garbage collection services, or to check their new collection date, can visit https://www.scgov.net/government/solid-waste

SS United States now in Gulf. Can you see ship pass from Sarasota, Bradenton shore?

The SS United States, the world's fastest ocean liner and 100 feet longer than the ill-fated RMS Titanic, has entered the Gulf on its way to becoming the world's largest artificial reef off Florida's Panhandle.
Still holding the record for being the largest passenger ship built in the U.S. at nearly 1,000 feet long, the vessel was purchased by Okaloosa County in October and will be sunk off Destin-Fort Walton Beach.
The ship had been docked in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for nearly 30 years before beginning its final voyage Feb. 20, guided by four tugboats.
SS United States is headed for Mobile, Alabama for cleaning and renovation before it's moved off Destin-Fort Walton Beach in Florida to become a new marine life habitat. The exact location has not been revealed.
On the way to the Gulf, the liner hugged the South Florida Coast and was spotted Wednesday off Palm Beach County Feb. 26.
As SS United States journeys through the Gulf, will it be visible from shore?
Where will SS United States be sunk?
After a remediation process in Mobile expected to take about a year, SS United States will be towed south of Destin-Fort Walton Beach to be sunk. A date and location have not been revealed.
"Before her deployment in the Gulf waters, all of the environmentally unsafe materials will be removed. This includes all non-metal items, wiring and fuel. She will have holes strategically cut around the ship to ensure she lands upright as she is submerged. Passages will also be opened allowing for marine life to thrive in and around the ship. All of the preparations in Mobile are in close collaboration with multiple environmental agencies including the Department of Environmental Protection and Environmental Protection Agency," Destin-Fort Walton Beach's website states.
How big is the SS United States compared to Titanic?
At 990 feet, the SS United States is more than 100 feet longer than Titanic.
To reduce weight and increase speed, more aluminum was used to build SS United States than any other previous project.
As a result, SS United States moved almost as fast in reverse as Titanic was able to move forward, according to the SS United States Conservancy
Most famous painting in the world was 'passenger' aboard SS United States
In 1963, Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa was reportedly transported on the SS United States to America, on loan from the Louvre in Paris for exhibitions in Washington and New York.
4 US presidents sailed on SS United States
Four U.S. presidents were once passengers on SS United States:
According to the SS United States Conservatory, Clinton was on his way to study at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar.
SS United States had famous passengers
In service from 1952 to 1969, the USS United States saw its share of other famous passengers, including:
Can you see SS United States from Sarasota, Manatee County, Florida shore?
SS United States moved into open waters of the Gulf after rounding the Florida Keys Thursday.
From there, it's expected to make a beeline to Mobile, Alabama, making it unlikely to be visible from shore until it reaches its destination.
Track SS United States route, current location off Florida, Gulf
USS United States left Philadelphia Feb. 14, traveled down the Delaware River to Delaware Bay and out to the Atlantic. The estimated two-week journey takes the liner down the East Coast and into the Gulf on the way to Mobile, Alabama where it will be readied for its final move south of Destin-Fort Walton Beach to be sunk.
You can track the SS United States live. An interactive map provided by Okaloosa County, showing the liner's current location, can be found here.

Sarasota senator pitches plan to rename U.S. 41, Tamiami Trail, to Gulf of America Trail

Florida is moving quickly to adopt a name change for the Gulf under the leadership of President Donald Trump, and U.S. 41 could be the first major roadway in line for a permanent name change in response.
State Sen. Joe Gruters, R-Sarasota, filed a bill for consideration during the legislative session beginning next week that would rename a stretch of U.S. 41 commonly known as Tamiami Trail to "Gulf of America Trail" — following suit with directives from the White House to adopt the name "Gulf of America" nationwide.
Named for the Florida cities it was built to connect, Tamiami Trail runs from Tampa to Miami. It opened in 1928 and served as the main thoroughfare between the two major metros until construction of Interstate 75 decades later.
In case you missed the news:Trump to sign executive order to rename Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America
Also:GOP bill would change 'Gulf of Mexico' to 'Gulf of America' in more than 50 state statutes
"There is a lot of love for the president in Southwest Florida specifically, and that stretch of Tamiami Trail from Tampa all the way through Collier is Trump country," Gruters told the Herald-Tribune. "There is no better way to show him our appreciation and love for our home-state president than naming one of the larger roadways after the Gulf of America."
The bill would also require that state agencies, county school districts and charter school boards to use teaching materials that reflect the name "Gulf of America." State Rep. Juan Carlos Porras, R-Miami, filed a similar bill last week in the Florida House.
Florida moves swiftly to adopt the "Gulf of America" name change
The bill was filed as a growing number of high-profile state officials call for expedited efforts to implement the Gulf of America name change. Trump signed an executive order adopting the name change on Jan. 20 during his first day back in office.
Sen. Nick DiCeglie, R-Indian Rocks Beach, and House Majority Leader Tyler Sirois, R-Merritt Island, have filed bills that would change references in state laws from Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America.
More:It's now Gulf of America. US officially makes Trump change to Gulf of Mexico
"The bill that I filed is very simple, any mention in Florida statute that says the words 'Gulf of Mexico' will simply change to Gulf of America," DiCeglie said. "It's a body of water that drives our tourism here in Pinellas County, and that goes for the entire west coast of Florida. We have beautiful beaches, and people come here from all over the world, and a simple name change to Gulf of America I think really celebrates that.
"I think it's fun. I think it's appropriate. I think it's patriotic," he said.
Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson also recently directed the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to enshrine the "Gulf of America" name change in all department rules, documents and maps.
Simpson, who is believed to have eyes set on a run for Florida governor after Gov. Ron DeSantis is termed out, said the Gulf has been of vital importance to the nation's economy, history and culture for generations and he supports Trumps efforts to stamp America's name on it.
