Diabetes Type 2 Treatment in Fruitville, FL

If you were to ask 10 doctors what they thought the key to happiness is, nine would probably say that great health plays a big role. But as we age, we often begin to take shortcuts in life that affect our health. We forego exercise for binging on Netflix. We substitute nutritious, whole foods for quick and easy alternatives at a drive-thru. We burn the midnight oil instead of getting a full eight hours of sleep. With time, poor life choices can lead to serious, snowballing consequences, like Type 2 Diabetes.

In April 2024, the CDC stated that nearly 37.3 million adults in the United States - which accounts for about 11.3% of the population - have received a diabetes diagnosis. Among them, 28.7 million have Type 2 Diabetes.

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which the body experiences high sugar levels for extended periods. With diabetes, your body either doesn't produce enough insulin or is unable to use it effectively. Insufficient insulin or decreased insulin sensitivity leads to elevated blood sugar levels, which can result in severe health complications over time, including:

Diabetes Treatment Fruitville, FL
Excessive Urination and Thirst

If you're constantly drinking water to quench your thirst or find that you have to go to the bathroom to urinate frequently, it could be a sign of Type 2 Diabetes. But why? When glucose levels in your body are high, it causes the body to remove extra fluids, leading to more thirst and frequent urination.

Fatigue

Do you get a full eight hours of sleep every night but still find yourself slogging through the day and drinking coffee to try to stay awake? This is a hallmark sign of Type 2 Diabetes. While there may be other factors at play, inefficiency in utilizing glucose for energy can cause persistent tiredness and weakness.

Visual Disturbances

If you notice your vision changing or becoming more blurry, you might need more than a new prescription for eyeglasses or contacts. When blood sugar levels in your body fluctuate, some patients experience blurred vision or changes to their vision. If you notice this happening frequently, it's probably time to reach out to a diabetes specialist.

Impaired Wound Healing

When we get a scratch or cut, our body does a miraculous job of healing the wound by itself over time. When you have Type 2 Diabetes, however, wound healing can become much slower. This can lead to a number of complications, not just as it relates to wound healing but also to your ability to resist infections.

Neuropathy

In the United States, neuropathy and diabetes often go hand-in-hand, with about 50% of people with diabetes suffering from the condition. Type 2 Diabetes-induced nerve damage can cause sensations of tingling or numbness, particularly in the hands and feet. If you notice such symptoms, contact Sarasota Diabetes & Neuropathy Center as soon as you're comfortable doing so.

Sarasota Diabetes & Neuropathy Center Pro Tip: Type 2 Diabetes symptoms may not be obvious in the beginning, so regular health screenings and glucose monitoring are crucial for early detection and effective management. Try Meal Planning with the Diabetes Plate

You can make healthy eating easier by using the "Diabetes Plate," which is a low-carb meal framework that helps you support your diabetes management with sensible food portions. Begin with a nine-inch plate and divide it in half to include non-starchy vegetables, one-quarter with lean proteins, and the remaining one-quarter with quality carbohydrates such as starchy vegetables, fruits, whole grains, or low-fat dairy.

If you're serious about sticking to a healthy diet, try eating these foods instead of processed products and meals from fast food restaurants:

Protein

Protein is a key part of a diabetes meal plan.Unfortunately, popular protein sources like red meat aren't always the best choice when you are obese or have diabetes. Try eating more skinless, grilled chicken and grilled or broiled fish instead. If you're a plant-based eater and avoid meat, don't worry. There are plenty of protein-packed plant-based options like beans, hummus, and lentils. But keep in mind that many legumes contain carbs, which can affect your diabetes management.

Non-Starchy Veggies

When you're using the Diabetes Plate example as your guide, try filling half your plate with non-starchy veggies like broccoli, collard greens, spinach, or cauliflower. They keep you feeling full and provide great-tasting nutrients without as many calories and carbs.

Healthy Fats

Many patients raise their eyebrows when their diabetes doctor tells them to include more fats in their diets. Of course, we're not talking about the bad fats you find in foods like seed oils, fried foods, and desserts like ice cream. We're talking about healthy fats found in foods like nuts, avocados, fish, and olive oils. These healthy fats can actually help protect your heart and lower your cholesterol.

Meal Planning Icon
Fruits

Few things are as refreshing as eating a fresh apple or orange from your local farmer's market. Fruits are a great source of carbohydrates, but they also contain essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber, similar to vegetables. Perhaps most importantly, fruits can satisfy your sweet cravings without the need for added sugar.

“We fielded hundreds of inquiries for this space before whittling the list down to a vetted, high-caliber group of prospective tenants,” Managing Broker Chris DiBitetto of ERES says in a statement. “This lease transaction speaks to the current demand for quality retail space in the high-growth Lakewood Ranch South submarket.”

The lease with Neuage started this month, DiBitetto says in a May 15 email.

ERES represented the landlord in the transaction, with DiBitetto leading the deal. The Class A retail space, which was built in 2021, features six private rooms and was formerly home to a chiropractor’s office, according to LoopNet.

Indian restaurant ranked No. 2 dining spot in Florida by Yelp opens new Sarasota location

An Indian eatery in Venice that was named the second best restaurant in Florida by Yelp in 2023, and opened a second location in Sarasota last year, has expanded once again.

Tikka Indian Cuisine is now open in the Sarasota Crossings shopping plaza at 5445 Fruitville Road, the former space of Royal Peacock Indian Kitchen, which has since permanently closed. It is the third location for Tikka, along with its original Venice restaurant in Bird Bay Plaza at 525A U.S. 41 Bypass N. and its previously opened Sarasota spot at 3550 Clark Road in Beneva Village Shoppes, under the slightly different name of Spice Indian Cuisine.

Pallavi Joshy, co-owner of Tikka along with partner Radhakrishna Sureddy, said they were interested in the 5445 Fruitville Road space back when they were looking to open a second location a few years ago, but it wasn't available then. So when the space became available again, they took it, even when they had another Sarasota location.

“This is a nice location — it’s just right off of the (I-75) exit, it’s a Publix plaza, it’s a busy complex," Joshy said. "So I know the inside restaurant is smaller compared to Tikka in Venice, but the location is really good.”

The new Tikka has the same menu as its other two locations, including curries such as tikka masala and clay-oven dishes such as tandoori chicken, as well as various appetizers, rices, naans, sides and desserts. For drinks, it offers beer and wine but not liquor, and the restaurant seats about 40, all indoors.

Tikka was the only Sarasota-Manatee establishment to make the top 20 of Yelp's Top 100 Florida Restaurants 2023 list, with Pla-Tu Sushi Thai Tapas in South Miami winning the top spot. Yelp's blurb on Tikka praised its "sleek, modern presentations of authentic North and South Indian dishes — from clay-oven-baked meats to biryani rice blends," its "'everything-from-scratch cooking'" and "ingredients plucked from local gardens or shipped fresh from India."

Royal Peacock Indian Kitchen opened in the 5445 Fruitville Road space in 2023, replacing a previous restaurant itself by the taking over the former space of Honolulu-based chain L&L Hawaiian Barbecue. Around the same time as L&L's closing, Wings-N-Weenies shut the doors at its nearby location at 5495 Fruitville Road, which is now occupied by breakfast and lunch restaurant EggTown.

The new Tikka is open 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and 4-9 p.m. daily except for Wednesday, when the restaurant is closed. For more information, call 941-413-5691 or visit tikkasarasota.com.
